Weekend Excursion

The world of contemporary Ger man photographer Andreas Gursky is large, bright, hyperbolic, and, for the first time, on exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Gursky delights in exaggerated images of modern world hotel lobbies, apartment buildings, warehouses, parliaments, sporting championships, international stock exchanges, and raves that are at once familiar and disconcerting. It's all too big, too loud, too anonymous.

The MoMA exhibit is comprised of 45 of Gursky's photographs and includes his earlier work, such as Klausenpass (1984) and Ruhr Valley (1989). However, it also focuses on his newer pictures, whose contemporary themes are echoed in their depiction, which sometimes includes computer manipulation by Gursky. Among his more recent works are Rhine II (2000), Prada II (1999), May Day IV (2000), and the overwhelmingly yellow and repetitive Shanghai (2000).

Organized by Peter Galassi, chief curator of the Department of Photography, the exhibition will travel to the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago after its stint at MoMA. —Diana M. Aleman

The exhibit is on view on the Third Floor of the Museum of Modern Art through Tues., May 15. The Museum is located at 11 West 53 St. between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
