Justice Clarence Thomas (LAW ’74) has finally broken his seven-year silence on the bench, but no news source really knows what he said. According to Slate, “Those in the courtroom say that Thomas was either making fun of Yale or Harvard.” TIME reported that a lot of other Supreme Court justices laughed in response, so we know it must have been rip-roaring. Thomas has historically not been a fan of Yale and even turned down the honor of having his portrait hung in the Law School, so if he actually did say that a Yale degree could make a lawyer incompetent, it wouldn’t be surprising. Who knows what he’ll say in 2020?
