Now, it is apparently all anyone wants to talk about. So much so that no one posted a status about how today was chicken tenders day. But for once, I have nothing snarky to say. I have spent several dozens of minutes today perusing the plucky little Facebook page, and I am in its thrall. Yes, I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and I’ve done most things in between thanks to Yale Memes. I guess all I can say is, “Y U GET SO POPULAR IN LIKE TWO HOURS?”

I guess I have much to learn about the internet.

The poster rocks. It’s technically part of Sex Week. It’s running two weekends. It’s starring Brennan Caldwell of Grace Kelly/ Sweeney Todd fame and resident stand up champ Yael Zinkow in roles that have them both in drag. And the play itself just sounds so awesome. From the wikipedia article: “Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by an East German transgender singer.” Everyone should go! It starts tonight and runs this weekend and next. Reserve tickets here, and then enjoy. In the meantime, check out this video of Brennan from last year’s “Everything at Once,” singing a hilarious song by seniors Ben Wexler and Mark Sonnenblick.

According to the event’s description, over-nourishment and obesity now trump under-nourishment as the world’s leading food and nutrition problem! In light of this, this new exhibit – sponsored by CARE at the Yale School of Public Health, the Rudd center, and the Peabody – will be opening this upcoming Saturday. That morning, the exhibit - ”Big Food: Health, Culture, and the Evolution of Eating” - will open at 10am with a reception featuring local food- and health-related organizations, crafts, a puppet show, a scavenger hunt, and even… a Zumba class? That way, if this exhibit makes you feel guilty about the food you eat, you’ll have a way to work off the calories doing Zumba. How efficient! Be sure to check out the teaser album that Yale just published on Facebook; it’ll compel you to consider walking over to the Peabody for the first time ever.

Esolen, I don’t think we’re at Providence College anymore.

On Monday night, Yalies came out in droves, packing WLH 116 for Professor Anthony Esolen’s talk on “The Person as a Gift” in order to stage a “kiss-in” protesting the True Love Week speaker’s ragingly homophobic and acrimonious past writings. Fifteen minutes into Professor Esolen’s lecture (which was confusingly a lot more about Irish music and step-dancing than one would expect), a tinny ringtone version of “I’m Coming Out,” which I’m guessing is not Professor Esolen’s favorite Diana Ross song, began to play. On that cue, couples and friends–gay and lesbian and straight–began going at it, to cheers and applause from most of the room. Some held up signs, one reading “Queer love is true love.” After about a minute, the kissing came to a close and protesters filed from the room, leaving Esolen to continue his talk before a crowd that had diminished to only a handful of listeners.

Before Esolen’s lecture began, Bijan Aboutorabi ’13, one of True Love Week’s organizers, said he was “very interested to see if Yale students, without disruption, can tolerate someone with whom they disagree.” While its unclear why LGBTQ people and their allies are expected to tolerate someone who so clearly has zero tolerance for them, last night’s kiss-in did just that. True, Yalies (briefly) interrupted Professor Esolen’s talk. But we did not berate him, prevent his lecture from occurring, or tell him that his vitriolic, extremist views don’t belong on our campus, especially during two events dedicated to the celebration of love and sexuality; we came, made our own views quite clear, and then left him to continue stating his. It was a heartening affirmation of the values that make Yale a better place every day, and a simple, cheerful way to fight hate with love.

Apparently the tone of comments has “ skidded to the nasty edges and run off the rails” since the mayoral race, and they’re using this time to figure out how they want to deal with the problem. They have some pretty harsh words on the subject, including these questions: “Are we reviving the civic square? Or managing a sewer with toxic streams that demoralize anyone who dares to take part in government or citizen activism?”

It’s pretty much impossible to imagine a website without any comments on it nowadays. That said, the more you read of this article, the more depressing and sad the Independent’s situation sounds. They’re calling this a ”time out” so they can refresh and recharge and figure out how to not always mess up and publish offensive comments by accident (basically their words). Good luck getting your act together, and enjoy the vacation from evil internet people.
