The Bullblog

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a week since the Rumpus put out its annual list of Yale’s 50 Most Beautiful People and set the world on fire (just kidding, no one really cared that much).  But it was fun to flip through the issue and see your friend who totally deserved it or that bitch from section who you were just looking for another reason to hate.  Now collected in one place is the complete list of winners, in alphabetical order and easily searchable (command-F!) for future reference.  Enjoy, and comment to let us know who you think was egregiously robbed (apart from the Bullblog editorial staff–we’re honestly getting tired of hearing it at this point).

Fridays at 5 is hosting Broadway director and choreographer Susan Stroman at 220 york this afternoon at 5 pm, and it looks really cool. Stroman is known for generally being incredibly successful in musical theater direction and choreography. Some of her biggest name projects include “The Producers” (she directed and choreographed the musical and the movie remake), and choreographing the ballet movie “Center Stage” (we know lots of you enjoy that movie a lot). She is a five time Tony winner, and she was the first woman to win the Tony both for directing and choreographing in the same year. There is also THAI FOOD for free after the talk. Check it out!

If you’ve been wondering why James Franco decided to bail as a judge for the prestigious Yale Freshman Talent Show, we may have an answer for you. Franco has been hard at work on UNDERGRADS: SOUTH, a “docu-web series” about “four University of Texas undergraduate film students in Austin and their movie making aspirations,” according to a recent press release from Joy Gohring, the series director. Ooh, a movie about movies produced by a movie star–it’s so meta! After watching the trailer, I have mixed feelings. Of course, it could also be because I can’t get over the fact that Franco’s production company is called Rabbit Bandini Productions, which sounds like a hipster band.

When one Yale meme dies, another springs right up to take its place. Here is #whatshouldwecallyale. Only eight posts so far (and no password!), so there’s plenty of room for new material, all ye aspiring memesters.

The newest of Yale-related internet phenomenon has been passed around from panlist to panlist recently. “Whatshouldwetapme”, a spin-off of the utterly brilliant #whatshouldwecallme tumblr, is a password-protected tumblr site that captures the ridiculousness (and hilarity) of Yale’s tap scene. The tumblr can be found here; the password is “sryimnotsry”. To whomever created this amazing blog, sryimnotsorry for sharing your exceptional wisdom. Given that tomorrow is tap night, we don’t expect this website to be around for much longer; we just want you [who are even remotely interested in tap-related events] to enjoy it while you can!

Edit: it looks like they changed the password to protect secrecy/privacy/everything holy.

This is actually an accurate photo of these burritos.

The fact that two equally sketchy-looking burrito carts sit at the corners of York & Elm St. can be confusing, for some students. The prices are almost the same; one sells burritos for $5 and the other for $6.  For those unfamiliar with these food carts, these guys literally set-up shop across from one another on either side of Elm. I’m here to tell you that once you take a bite out of each cart’s burrito, a very clear winner emerges. “Tijuana tacos” is the cart on the Trumbull side of this battle. It’s $6 bucks (on the pricier side of York St. food carts, yes, but not let that deter you) for a burrito with beans (black ones), rice (the Spanish kind), salsa (choose from hot, medium, or mild), sour cream, guacamole (AT NO EXTRA CHARGE – an enormous rarity for New Haven), a sort of delicious cabbage/onion garnish, and your choice of pork, chicken, beef, etc. The most important thing for you to realize is that, compared to the burritos across the street, there really is no competition. Even compared to Moe’s “Southwest” Grill, these burritos take the cake every time. The man working the cart is mighty friendly, and every time I visit I swear he purposefully gives me extra fillings in my burrito because he can barely wrap the thing.  If you ever find yourself hungry on York & Elm (which, unsurprisingly is myself every single day), give it a go!

After an aborted eviction attempt by the city, the Occupy movement has been allowed to stay on the New Haven Green.

At around noon today, following a district court ruling in the city’s favor, New Haven sent police officers, bulldozers, and trash trucks to clear the Green. Shortly after the team had begun to clear up the tents, however, the city received notice that a federal court had ordered a stay, suspending the city’s right to evict the protesters. The camp now lies half-destroyed, but the movement can stay until a final decision is reached by the courts, which will in all likelihood happen within the next week.

The scene on the Green was chaotic. Protesters were heard chanting things like ”Do you tell your children what you do for work?” ”Whose green? Our green” and ”What do you do when you’re under attack? Stand up, fight back”.

The man wearing the helmet and carrying the flag in this picture, who was leading the chants, is wearing a shirt that said “Reb Law”– from a Yale law school conference.

There were about 2 bulldozers and 2 dump trucks. Police were looking inside tents to see if anyone was inside and then  dumping protesters’ tents and belongings inside dump trucks.

Police placed yellow crime scene tape around the protesters’ tents, designating that they were able to arrest anyone inside without warning.  At least one protester was arrested during the stand-off with the police.  He was trying to climb onto the back of a dump truck and police came over, wrestled him to the ground and put him in hand cuffs. Protesters complained about the NHPD “illegally” taking their property and their “comrades.” There was discussion of “marching to the police station and getting them back,” but it is unclear if the march actually took place. A protester, wearing a black bandana over his face, yelled “fascist!” to the police officers. In the picture below, protesters were running after the man being arrested, yelling at the police.

There are a large number of people standing outside the lines of the police tape. The protesters were trying to lure them in with offers of oatmeal, coffee, and donuts. One protester joked, “The donuts are for the police, but you can have the coffee”.

After it became clear that the camp had temporarily escaped eviction, the mood in the camp quickly changed from tense to celebratory. “The constitution isn’t dead!” said protester Donald Montanl. “It’s just in a coma. This is a great victory. Tell anyone who wants to come celebrate freedom that there will be celebrations tonight and tomorrow night. Everyone is invited.”

GET OUT!!!

By   |   April 9th 2012

Courtesy of my hometown Boston Herald comes this story about Yalie Aleca Hughes who has just won the  2012 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award for her work in founding the Mandi Schwartz Foundation. Congratulations to Ms. Hughes — it’s great news. It’s the sort of selfless work that deserves recognition and reward — although to quote Hughes, “Hard work is its own reward.”

Regardless of how often you watch this movie, the boat still sinks.

Every time you think the world is done with Titanic, it turns out you were wrong! If the traveling museum exhibit and the recent 3D movie were not enough for you, Yale librarian Judith Ann Schiff has uncovered some new romance stories from the unsinkable ship with Yale connections. The most eerily James Cameron-esque one features Yale alumnus Karl Behr. Karl was in love with Helen Newsom, whose parents didn’t approve of the match. (If you think you know where this story is going, you’re wrong, trust me). They took Helen to Europe to get her away from Karl, but being a clever, resourceful sort, he contrived to go to Europe and then return to America with them on the Titanic. When the boat hit the iceberg, Karl rushed to the aid of Helen and her parents. They all boarded a lifeboat and lived happily ever after. You might think this story is too good to be true, but it’s not.

Why is this better than the movie? There’s a happy ending, ROSE DOESN’T LIE!!!, there’s no class tensions because everyone’s rich, everyone lives.

Why is this worse than the movie? No angsty drama, no Celine Dion soundtrack (okay, this might be a benefit), no underdog to root for (everyone probably looks like Rose’s evil fiancé aka Billy Zane)

P.S. If you haven’t had your fill of Titanic and have three free hours, Titanic 3D is showing at the Criterion at 11:45am, 3:50pm, and 8:00pm.

It took me a while to figure out the purpose of this building. With the help of GoogleMaps and a Yale directory of “historic buildings”, I discovered that this beautiful – and very recently unveiled – building is the old art gallery. Recently featured in the YDN, the building will eventually house a number of the YUAG’s collections and stand as an extension of the gallery itself. The exciting part about this whole unveiling (in my humble opinion) is the erection of a half-dozen or so stone benches that stand as perfect hang out spots. Looking for a place to eat your Little Salad Shop salad (likely, given that there are TWO whole tables in that place)? Need a spot to have your Starbucks that’s outside (so people can stare at you drink your passionfruit tea lemonade)? Searching for a place to do reading that won’t be as distracting as Old Campus? Look no further! The perfect spot is here, and it looks like it’s here to stay.

TODAY 4PM: There’s a really awesome Master’s Tea today in Stiles with Dave Levin, who founded the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) which provides free college-preparatory charter schools across the country. If you’re interested in education policy, inspirational people, or colleges with no right angles, you should go.

TODAY 4PM: A sketchier option to cure your 4pm boredom is the Red Bull Paper Wings paper airplane competition in Commons. Unclear why our favorite energy drink company is doing this, but the email reports that the top five contestants from each country win an all-expenses-paid trip to Austria to fly more paper airplanes. This nice trip includes “a stay at the nicest hotel in Salzburg, tons of free Red Bull gear to compete in, as well as free passes and drinks to the nicest nightclubs in the city.” Sounds nice.

SUNDAY: There’s a campus-wide Easter egg hunt! This is especially great if you aren’t going home for Easter/Passover weekend. This is also especially great if you weren’t able to get any Easter eggs from the FCC Old Campus egg hunt last week. Maybe, just maybe, the tour groups can leave some for us this time.

but really guys... what is this?

Reflecting, lagging, FREAKING OUT.

YSD graduate/former Yale instructor/excellent playwright Amy Herzog has just debuted a new play in NYC called “4000 Miles.”  The play explores the relationship between a grandmother and her grandson. Notable is a new New York Times review by Charles Isherwood which uses the following words to describe the play: “truthful,” “touching,” “fine,” “beautifully-rendered,” “perfection.” Put up by the Lincoln Center Theater, the show is running currently in New York. Nice to see a Yale grad make something of herself!

…then today is your lucky day! Now, you can enjoy the Yale Center for British Art from your desk through Google Art Project! If you, like me, had not heard of this before, Wikipedia informs us that Google Art Project is “an online compilation of high-resolution images of artworks from galleries worldwide, as well as a virtual tour of the galleries in which they are housed.” Clicking on the paintings gives you information about the artist, the medium, and some helpful links to explore more. This is actually an impressively legitimate project, seeing as the Yale Center for British Art is listed next to the likes of the Met and Acropolis Museum. So if you, like me, wish to easily attain culture while curled up on a futon eating Claire’s cake, take a look.

Alex Addison (CC, ’12), a member of The Fifth Humor, has been working on a video that captures “surviving the emotional roller coaster of hooking up…one hickey at a time.” In case you haven’t been formally introduced, Addison is the girl in the above trailer with the (really, really realistic) hickey and blonde wavy locks.  From what we can gather through the trailer, the video will be exactly what the tagline implies: the intertwining stories and emotional ups and downs of college students hooking up. The trailer is filled with notable (good-looking) Yalies, including Sarah Matthes (JE, ’13), Cleo Handler (SY, ’12), and Alex Klein (DC, ’12). The full-length movie is set to be released April 16th.
