Seattle received 1000 cerrhy trees as a gift from Japan many years ago. There are a large quantity of them on the University of Washington campus and I loved spending time there when they were in bloom. Sadly, many of the trees are starting to die as they are reaching the end of their lifespan (something like 60 or 70 years) so they are hoping to replace most of them with grafts from the original trees. I'm not sure how that's going.

Yeah, definitely not true that most study abroad programs don’t compare to Yale’s academic rigor. It’s just that when you go to places like Europe, no one’s forcing you to do work or attend classes everyday -- it’s up to you. Yale is not he pinnacle of academia, but the university is pretty good at convincing undergraduates of that fact. If I were you, I would’ve done some real research into study abroad programs that allow you to study at European Universities. The experience of being in a different academic situation is difficult but ultimately rewarding if you can learn to accept and adapt to other methods of doing things. It’s only a semester or year, and Yale is great, but it’s not the best thing out there by far. Also, your generalization of those girls studying in Prague? The observations you made probably had more to do with them than the experience of studying abroad itself. And also, don’t overrate academics. They’re important, but there are a lot more important things to a college experience, like learning how to be a real human. Studying abroad is a way of growing if you treat the experience accordingly.

Jack, devote your time to something deeper and more meaningful than this. You have great writing potential, and you also have wit, like your grandfather. I hope you will use your abilities for your Creator, who created you for a purpose, and not for yourself. "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14) "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Matthew 16:26)
