Last night, while you were deciding which class you should take to fulfill your pre-industrial history requirement, there was something much cooler going on at the Yale School of Art’s 32 Edgewood Gallery. There you could find wine, cheese, asymmetrical haircuts, the latest in eyewear design, and most importantly, a whole bunch of artist Alex Katz’ master works. Titled “Katz x Katz”, the show certainly delivers as much Katz as promised, featuring 70 works from Katz’s personal collection. Included in the show are his signature mural-like canvases, oil sketches, working drawings, collages, prints, and cut-outs— all defined by their sedated colors, their two-dimensional forms, their economy of line, and their provocative emotional detachment. The show will be on display Jan. 14-March 10 at the School of Art’s 32 Edgewood Gallery (that small steel building on Edgewood. Here.) You should check it out.
