im roundup
So, we’re in fourth. This is not acceptable. Fourth is the position of just-off-the-podium at the Olympics. The position of no-one-cares-about-you-because-this-isn’t-Little-League-anymore-and-not-everyone-gets-a-trophy. The position of not-quite-good-enough. But we are good enough. We are better than good enough. We are the college of Louis Gilbert, ’12, who single handedly reinvented the co-ed football team, bringing us to an incredible third place finish against tough competition. The college of Jonathon K-T, ’12, who placed seond overall in the men’s cross country race. The college that supports its table tennis team so strongly that we are willing to pre-game the final match and cheer them on, despite the fact that some of us may have had class the next morning at 9 a.m. Which (digression alert!) we then may have slept through. The college of Chaka Jaliwa. Enough said. We will not remain in fourth for long. (By which I mean, we will move into third, and the second, and the first. Obviously).

Pierson
Tues., Nov. 3, 2009, we returned to glory. And it is the best type of glory. Glory to end the season. Glory to carry with us for the next 10 months. Or if you are seniors, glory to carry with you for the rest of your life. We ended the season with a dominating victory over Calhoun. Calhoun came in cocky and expected to step all over us. They found out they were far from correct. Pierson showed the type of powerhouse it can be today. Junior Bing Luo showed why he is the most feared man in all of IM ping pong with a dominating victory at No. 1 men’s. If people didn’t know who Sam Hamer and Mu Li were before, they certainly will now. These two freshmen both helped Pierson return to glory. Other IM Ping Pong squads are now shaking for they see what Pierson offers in the future. Hamer rolled to a victory at No. 2 singles. Mu combined with IM Veteran Catherine Osborne to win at No. 1 doubles. Collin Gutman captured No. 3 singles by accepting Calhoun’s forfeit (they had heard about Collin’s storied four years with Pierson, and did not want to put anyone up against him). And Alice and I were able to round out the victory by slamming our opponents at No. 2 doubles.

Saybrook
Many teams have found it was tougher than they anticipated to defend a championship, even with high expectations. The 1997 Packers were 11 point favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champs, but couldnt pull it off. USC was four minutes away from repeating as BCS champs with a 12 point lead and couldn’t hold on. Even Miley couldn’t hold off Selena Gomez at this years Kids Choice awards for best female actress. And despite not having Brett Favre, Matt Leinart or Reggie Bush, Saybrook managed to defend two fall titles with undefeated seasons in record fashion. In football, the team won its fourth championship in five years, with the senior class enjoying three 11-0 perfect seasons. In soccer, Saybrook went the entire season without allowing a goal, with standout goalie Matt Kremer rarely called upon to make a save, en route to a second straight undefeated campaign. With the Cantabs on the horizon for two games at the end of the year once again, and Master Hudak and Saybrook coed football getting a big win last week, Saybrook IMs are on a roll and hoping to carry their momentum into the winter season.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Went up the Tyng Cup standings
Out came the Lion
and destroyed the puny spider!
Nursery rhyme or prophecy?
Ok JE, we’ve seen this happen before: You get all excited because you’re winning some IMs, but in the end it takes a true experienced champion to clinch the Tyng. I’m not going to lie; I’ve enjoyed the competition this year. Friday I played in and witnessed one of the best and most competitive IM soccer games ever. However, with our tie in men’s soccer, our win in women’s soccer, and our crushing victory in ping-pong, the Lions have proved that the Spiders are not invincible. You might finish this season at the top, but I thought I should let you know that the lions are right behind you. We’re hungry and furious, and this break between fall and winter IMs will only intensify our animosity. So go home, give thanks for all your beginner’s luck, but sleep in fear, for the Lion is king and shall sit on its throne once again.

Trumbull
Trumbull College is full of leaders. It’s built on the backs of men and women who aren’t afraid to get out there and stand on their own, facing down the savage throngs of the other colleges.
So, today, I dedicate this blurb to Katherine Eshel, ’13. This young Trumbullian, as ballsy (figuratively) as she is beautiful, stared down the entire Stiles-Morse Women’s Soccer team alone. Yep. No one else showed up. Out of the 400 plus girls in Saybrook and Trumbull combined; only Eshel was fearless enough to represent the giants of Elm St in our final women’s soccer game.
This was to be expected though. She’s a symbol of the warrior spirit that drives Trumbull IMs. Earlier this season, she broke her arm in a soccer game, reportedly in an all out brawl with some silly girl that didn’t know that she was a Texan from France. And they don’t give a f*ck. The other girl is still riding one of those old people scooters. According to sources, Eshel was able to put up fifteen goals on the ES-MC team in a scrimmage to end all scrimmages.
