Around the Ivies: Carey v. Harvard

By 3 October 2009 5 Comments

Harvard’s famous. And with fame comes great responsibility. Like the responsibility of putting stuff together—Ikea furniture, a good outfit, two and two. But Legos? In the groovin’ ballad “Up Out My Face,” from her new album, (this is not a joke) Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Mariah Carey grossly disses the Harvard University graduating class of 2010, à propos of their Lego-sticking abilities—or rather, lack thereof.

Here’s what the sultry songstress had to say: “If we were two Lego blocks / even the Harvard University graduating class of 2010 couldn’t put us back together again.” Uh-oh. The last time someone started a fight with Harvard, Tupac got shot. Reponses on the Cambridge, MA campus have been varied.

Rose Schlossberg, Harvard ’10, was not pleased: “We don’t take it as a diss; we take it as a challenge. We can beat this. We can beat this, Harvard,” she told the Herald.

“I feel disrespected,” said Jerry Tullo, Harvard ’12, “but [the class of 2010] is not the most intelligent class to pass through, you know? Legos are easy to put together.”

But among the class of 2010, the mood was not dampened but defiant. It’s been 17 years since Oct. 1 was 36 degrees in Boston—but you wouldn’t know it from the cold stare of Sarah Wick, Harvard ’10: “I just feel like everyone at Yale is making fun of people at Harvard for being stupid,” she said. “Mariah Carey can go fuck herself. When Taylor Swift or an artist of that caliber disses us, then we’ll take it seriously.”

Hopefully Mariah will learn her lesson, even though there’s no final exam, and think twice next time before she insults an Ivy League school. Here at Yale, we’ve got our brass knuckles ready.

Perhaps Kevin Harrington, Harvard ’12, summed up the Harvard mindset best: “Who’s Mariah Carey?” he asked. “All I do is study.”

Harvard hasn’t issued a press release, but if it did, it might read a little like this: “And I was like, why you so obsessed with me?”

For all the Harvard grads who were thinking about working at Legoland but feel insecure about their lego-sticking abilities, there’s hope. The Carlsbad, CA, location has an opening for chief pastry chef. Apply now, Cantabs!

What’s especially strange about Mariah’s word choice is that the line, in addition to seeming cumbersome in print, is quite a mouthful for the sexy singer on stage. The lyric occurs at a point in the song that might be called a break; that stands apart, rhythmically speaking, from the rest of the piece, and yet she still struggles to spit the lengthy verse.

Just don’t expect to see Ms. Carey on the playlist of the next Boston Tea Party.

  • Harvard says to Mariah: “Why you so obsessed with me?” Lol

    Epic win of the year.

  • my haverford school classmate Drew Brazer is international marketing director for Lego, International at their HQ in CT. And he’s a Princeton/Harvard B-School grad, I’m a Harvard/Wharton/Penn Engineering product and a biotech man.

Suffice it to say we can handle Legos just fine, but go ask Drew yourself. He was once the finest soccer, hockey and lacrosse player in the Ivy League once upon a time.

My twelve year old twin sons could build intricate robots out of micro-legos when they was like six. they’re up to programming computers now that he’s 12. that’s advanced progeny for you.

in all fairness, i always wanted to go to yale.

  • The line is “EVEN the Harvard University graduating class of 2010 couldn’t put us back together again.” So if you weren’t complete idiots you would realize this is actually a compliment to Harvard students because she’s saying that her and her man are so broken apart that EVEN Harvard students couldn’t put them back together, let alone everyone else in the world. So STFU Yale and stop embarrassing yourselves.

  • OMG this whole thread is stupid it’s a fuxkin song you idiots.
It’s not a damn challenge I hope you took it as a joke or this post is sarcastic
Or you guys are idiots, and not as smart as you think.

  • Wow, looks like Harvard students really are stupid if they didn’t realize she was paying them a compliment like ummmmm posted.
