See, Sip, Savor aims to make every week Restaurant week

By 16 October 2009 No Comments

As Family Weekend quickly fades into our beer-soaked memories, so too fades the prospect of a three-course meal that does not include Turkey Mango Chili. But there is hope for the cost-challenged gastronomes among us in the guise of See Sip Savor, New Haven’s new program that makes every week Restaurant Week.

After the success of New Haven’s first-ever Restaurant Week in 2008, a selection of New Haven restaurants are offering prix-fixe dinners and, in some cases, lunches until June 2010. Under the new See Sip Savor initiative, a collaboration between fancy New Haven restaurants and three local theaters, three-course dinners will cost 29 dollars per person, and lunches, 19 dollars.

The Long Wharf, the Yale Rep, and the Schubert are all sponsoring the program, designed to be enjoyed in conjunction with a visit to the theater, as its restrictions indicate. You must be seated for your prix-fixe dinner, for example, before six p.m. or after nine p.m. Good hours for theatergoers, but also good hours for Yale students, for whom a five p.m. dinner—not even half-way through the school day—can serve as an indulgent lunch.

The list of restaurants features all the heavy hitters: Union League, Ibiza, and Bespoke, to name a few. And it doesn’t seem like any of these restaurants have toned down their culinary flair for the proverbial cheap-seats. At Bespoke, one possible meal combination includes the ceviche du jour; a pan skillet salted hanger steak garnished with creamed spinach, au gratin potatoes, asparagus, and choron sauce; and finally, a chocolate banana semi-fredo. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg lettuce.

Restaurant week has always served as an excuse for young folk to dress up, swill aquavit, and generally act like adults—the question now is: Are we going to start acting like adults all year long? Surely the answer is no…but there’s nothing like a good demi-glaze.
