Music: Echo & Drake

Echo & Drake do love their guitars. A local band from Hartford, CT, Echo & Drake recently self-released their debut album, Sundrenched Elsewhere, an LP brimming with lush, melodic guitar washes that give it a bit of a dreamy, idyllic feel. These are guitars that wouldn’t be out of place in an Explosions in the Sky track. Catchy pop vocals play off the guitars nicely, injecting life into what might otherwise become soporific.

“I don’t want to die in my hometown,” sings lead singer Jon Ericson on the song “Mad Hatter,” and it is clear that Echo & Drake is a band dreaming of indie rock stardom.

The album has echoes of all the indie rock staples, from The National to, occasionally, Fleet Foxes. Sundrenched Elsewhere, is, simply put, a solid record of indie rock songs. The music is almost always pleasant to listen to, and on songs like the title track, Ericson’s drawn-out falsetto is quite beautiful.

If the album feels like it goes on a little too long, chalk that up to Echo & Drake’s eagerness to share their ideas; this is a band that loves to make music, and that will take them far. They might pull from their indie rock influences a bit too much on some songs, but as they continue to refine their individual style, Echo & Drake could go places.
