Here's our no-bull guide to the Tailgate, with all the types of U-hauls represented.

The tailgate, if you haven’t ever been to it before, is overwhelming. There are thousands and thousands of people and no one knows where to go. No one, that is, except the Bullblog. Here’s our no-bull guide to the Tailgate, with all the types of u-hauls represented:

COLLEGE TAILGATES: Crucial of course. There will be burgers, hot dogs, and probably music. On the other hand, your master’s administrative assistant will probably be manning the grill, which is a little awkward when you’re seven drinks in at 11 a.m.

FRAT TAILGATES: The crux of the whole event, if you’re a Yale undergrad. Heavy hitters DKE and Zeta are out of commision—most of their members will be on the Gridiron—but SAE and SigEp both say they are going all-out. The latter is teaming up with the PiPhi sorority for an extra-special mix of Oxford Shirts and Fur mini-dresses (the latter, of course, courtesy of YDN Multimedia editor Courtney Pannell, a Bullblog favorite). And we hear that a shadow donor will be giving them the funds to serve virtually unlimited Jack Daniels & Tequila.

JACK WILLS TAILGATE: As the last stop of their Fall College tour, the apparel brand will be bringing their two luxe Range Rovers for a serious extravaganza. Free boxers and other goodies will be available. The A&F look-alikes will set up shop (DJ in hand) right next to SigEp’s liquor-filled goodness.

SPORTS TEAM TAILGATES: Many of the Varsity teams not playing Saturday—Soccer, Heavyweight crew—will be representing tomorrow morning. Sadly, many of these will not be super-public, so you may have to know the captain or something.

ALUMNI TAILGATES: We’ve heard these constitute the true land of milk and honey, with fancy liquor and good food galore. You’ll have to sneak in though, which requires a certain elan—if you’ve got it, flaunt it.

HARVARD TAILGATES: No.

Ideally, you will show up to the tailgate bright and early already drunk. A very wise man once told me that a hangover was just alcohol withdrawal… this thought will help you Saturday morning, believe me. Start slow with hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps, or start hard with cider and rum. If you want to start really hard – but pacing is important! – just pick up whatever Solo cup is next you when you wake up. School spirit(s)!

Once you get to the tailgate, you can continue drinking any of the above or take advantage of the one day of the year when the keg has something nicer in it than Keystone Light. Then, play this game:

TAKE ONE SIP IF:
– you realize you and everyone you know is wearing the Sig Ep “Harvard Sucks” sunglasses
– you spot a woman in a long fur coat
– your dean or master is manning the keg
– you spill a drink on a Harvarder
– you see someone get in trouble with the police
– you spot the real Handsome Dan
– a Cantab admits that our tailgate > theirs

TAKE TWO SIPS IF:
– you run into a relative and you’re already drunk
– you run into a professor
– you yourself get in trouble with the police… the Game is a “big deal” for Perrotti
– you pee outside
– you start shivering
– you see a man in a long fur coat
– you accidentally step on Handsome Dan

CHUG IF:
– you boot and need to rally
– you realize you missed the first half of the Game
– you get lost at the Harvard tailgate– it’s the only way to deal when surrounded by Cantabs.

I just got an e-mail saying Mory's is going to have a tent at this year's Harvard-Yale tailgate, serving a full brunch for $50 (by reservation only) and baker's soup and drinks for normal prices.

While Mory’s was open—yes, this is dating me—I was a big fan. It was ironic, I guess: I would go with my bff Hannah regularly, often at our preferred lunch hour, when fares were lower and the Welsh rarebit was available. Lots of good memories of dressing up and being the youngest people in the room, all brought to a harsh end when the club went bankrupt last year. But it looks like things are turning around! I just got an e-mail from rsoltesz@morys1849.org saying Mory’s is going to have a tent at this year’s Harvard-Yale tailgate, serving a full brunch for $50 (by reservation only) and baker’s soup and drinks for normal prices. They’ll also be showing plans for the renovated building. Exciting! I doubt I’ll splurge for the full brunch, but a cup of baker’s soup will be a nice Proustian madeline for second semester freshman year.
