Brownell might be at risk of throwing stones from his Edwards St glass house.

In a post on the NYTimes’s “Room for Debate” blog, Kelly Brownell, the widely-acclaimed head of Yale’s Rudd Center, argued personal responsibility has been overplayed in the debate on the obesity crisis. He says the nation’s toxic food culture, rather than the second deadly sin of gluttony, is to blame for the nation’s rapidly increasingly problems with weight gain. To combat the problem, he says we have to address the societal causes—to move toward “Better foods in schools, less marketing of unhealthy foods, economic policies that change prices of healthy and unhealthy foods, and crackdowns on misleading nutrition claims on packages are examples of constructive and needed public action.”—before confronting the issue of personal responsibility. On that first idea, though, Brownell might be at risk of throwing stones from his Edwards St glass house… anyone who has tried the Saag Paneer in the dining hall knows the first place that needs to look into getting better food is Yale.

The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity strikes again, as Dr. Kelly Brownell advocates a soda tax in the fight against childhood obesity. A 12-pack of Coke would rise in price from $2.99 to $4.43. Can we keep the price low on Diet Coke, then? Please???
