The only place to get a burger in New Haven that’s not on white bread, Prime 16, is also hosting the first part of the Connecticut Real Ale Festival this weekend. There’s an “informal gathering” tonight (January 30) at 7 PM with brewers and beer representatives at Prime 16 tonight, while the festival itself will be at the Bru Room at BAR tomorrow night. The BAR website says to check back frequently for more details and tickets regarding the event, but no further information seems to be available on the upcoming festival.

As always, the Bullblog does not endorse or promote underage drinking.

Take a deep drink, it's not happening again til May.

It’s the last day and it’s time to get your drinking schedule back on track! If you’re like me, you have plans to start drinking as soon as everything is all done (at 11:30, after my 9am final). If you’re more brave than I, you could even start drinking before your final begins or during your final with the aid of vodka and a clear water bottle (the middle school dance drink of choice!). All you need to play this game is a keen pair of eyes, a bottle of brew, and a strong stomach.

TAKE A SIP EVERY TIME…

You see someone fall asleep on their exam.

You see people running out of a final, throwing all their papers in the air and exclaiming “I’m freeeee!!!!” in front of their professor.

You see someone road-runnering it to an exam at 9:10am or 2:10pm.

You finish your last exam or paper.

TAKE A SHOT EVERY TIME…

You are the victim of finals-pranking debauchery.

You see someone with a cheat sheet tattooed to their ankle.

You see one person say “I’m done!” and another person punch them in the face.

You see someone start crying mid-exam.

You finish your last exam or paper.

FINISH YOUR DRINK IF…..

You see freshmen tearfully saying good bye to their friends they’re going to miss over break.

Your teacher announces you have 5 minutes left and you still have an entire essay to go.

You sleep through your exam. Fight the pain!

You still haven’t started a paper. It’ll come so much more quickly!

Your teacher notices that you are drinking a polar seltzer bottle-sized gin and tonic in their exam.

You finish your last exam or paper.

Upon passage of both parts of the exam, the test taker would receive a state-issued photo ID to show a police officer if they are pulled over for speeding or if they're found in an alley in a pool of their own sick.

Former Middlebury College President John M. McCardell Jr published an editorial on CNN.com today denouncing the US’s “incomprehensible” alcohol policy. McCardell, who runs the Amethyst Initiative, a group dedicated to the lowering of the drinking age, advocated licensing drinkers similar to the way we license drivers, thereby allowing only the responsible 18-to-21-year-olds to pound Irish Carbombs at Anna Liffey’s. A lot of university presidents and chancellors have gotten on board with Amethyst (there’s a list on the website, along with a great slideshow of young responsible people enjoying wine), although Yale has yet to make the leap.

Spurred on by the editorial, House democrats have hurriedly introduced a measure, HR887a, onto the floor that would combine drivers’ licenses with the new drinkers’ licenses. If the bill passes, DMV exams would be composed of the classic drivers’ test with the addition of an written exam which would test the exam taker’s knowledge of alcohol responsibility, what to do in case a friend has drunk to much, and how to make a perfect Cosmo. Upon passage of both parts of the exam, the test taker would receive a state-issued photo ID to show a police officer if they are pulled over for speeding or if they’re found in an alley in a pool of their own sick.

Okay, so I made up that second paragraph. Obviously I completely support lowering the drinking age, and I think McCardell’s ideas, though clearly concessions to an uninterested political climate, have some merit. But honestly, it won’t ever happen unless most Americans stop thinking that these kind of laws protect people, and stop voting for candidates who are “tough” on anything. Except for Dennis Kucinich, who seems to be able to get re-elected no matter what batshit positions he takes on, I find it hard to imagine any lawmakers, even Democrats, getting behind this idea. Alas, the group of people who would unanimously flock to such a politician—namely, 18-to-21-year-old voters—is much, much smaller than the group that a politician needs to keep in his good graces—stupid people.
