Five science classes to take if you’re scared of real science classes
Hate science, but enjoy catching and/or eating fish? This is the perfect class for you. Although the name sounds scary, this class is really just about fish, focusing on “fish diversity, including jawless vertebrates, chimaeras and sharks, lungfishes, and ray-finned fishes.” Rumor has it that all you have to do is write a paper that doesn’t have to have anything to do with science.
2.The Technological World — APHY 110 — Victor Henrich
If you’re like me and are basically inept at operating any piece of electronic equipment (including a basic touch tone phone) then this class should help you. One student says, “Absolutely take it if you need a science credit. It’s not difficult and pretty fun.” Another claims, “You feel like a baller being able to explain LCD screens and DVDs, trust me.” A lot of great conversation starters and/or pick up lines could be derived from this class. Also, the professor “looks sort of like an awesome wizard.”
3. Movie Physics — PHYS 101 — Francis Robinson
“A critical evaluation of Hollywood action movies using the laws of physics and Fermi-type estimation techniques to distinguish between fictional and real movie physics” [read: an excuse to watch Hancock, Casino Royale, Die Hard, The Hulk, and Star Trek]. All you do is watch movies and figure out if the crazy stunts are actually possible. However, it is difficult to get into. My friend lied the first day and told the professor that her crush was a physics major and she needed a way to talk to him. It worked.
4. Biological Anthropology — ANTH 110 — David Watts
I took this class. You just need to show up, pay attention, and memorize a bunch of fossils. It’s also great if you’re into monkeys, bones, and M&MS.
5. Chemistry in the Modern World — CHEM 110 — Narasimhan Ganapathi
This class discusses how “chemistry shapes human lives,” and students claim it is a “painless science credit.” Not as exciting as fish, DVD players, action movies, or bonobos, but easy nonetheless.
