Beat the heat: the best spots to cool down

By 1 September 2010 One Comment

Scroll and Key looks pretty cool, but we'll never know because it's "secret"

If you were sizzling in New York this summer you may have come across, frequented, or heard tell of New York’s new “cooling stations”, which the city of New York describes as “a facility, such as a senior center or community center, where people may go to enjoy air-conditioned comfort during a heat emergency.”  New Haven hasn’t joined the trend just yet, but we’ve explored the campus and found you the best places to stay cool in this stifling weather.

The fourth floor of Payne Whitney
For Payne Whitney’s less frequent visitors, this is where the “normal” gym resides. It’s kept frigid (unlike the stuffy elevators) and as an added bonus you can watch as people build up a sweat on the treadmills.

Stop here on your way to: Swing Space.

The new Morse Fountain
Sun bathe and cool off in Morse’s weird new fountain that came with its renovation. People have been spotted here in swimsuits, so it’s also a good place to maintain your summer glow.

Stop here on your way to: Broadway liquor.

212 York
Students who shopped classes in this building today probably wished they had brought a sweater to this ice hotel. Some even reported to wanting to be in the sun after spending time in here.

Stop here on your way to: the YDN building, the Edgewood/Lynwood/Park sector, the Af-Am house.

Bass or Bass Café
The most conveniently located, this glimmering oasis is a good go-to spot for pretty much any class. Dip in on the old campus side, walk through, and come out the Commons side. Better than sticking your head in a bucket of ice.

Stop here on your way to: Science Hill, Rosenkranz, SSS and beyond.

The bench between Dport and Arnold Hall
Happening upon this bench is a little bit like entering Narnia, pre the end of the White Witch.
It’s kind of like the warm spot in the archway of Pierson that you can hover in during winter, but air conditioned.

Stop here on your way to: Gheav and other Broadway destinations, Dport, Toads.

The check-out line at Gheav
Gheav’s air conditioner is conveniently placed right above the check-out counter. Stay cool while you peruse the assortment of Haribo candy.

Stop here on your way: home from going out (and pick up some a extra-large can of Arizona Iced tea while you’re at it).

PLACES AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Commons
No air conditioning + frying oil = heat exhaustion.

Off-Campus parties
If Yale isn’t rich enough to afford air conditioning, how can a bunch of college kids?

HGS
Hot. Gross. Sticky.
