BREAKING: Shaw’s to close March 31

By 12 February 2010 7 Comments

The Bullblog has just confirmed that Shaw’s on Whalley will be closing on March 31st. No one at the store could give a reason, though this article says the chain’s Connecticut outlets have all been sold to other grocery conglomerates. At this time, Shaw’s is the only major grocery store within walking distance of downtown New Haven. Other food vendors include small bodegas, Asian groceries, and the slightly further-flung Edge of the Woods. Earlier this year, the YDN reported that a grocery would be opening in the next couple years in the in-construction 360 State building.

UPDATE: Shaw’s Corporate closes at 5 p.m. and could not be reached for comment.

UPDATE: The Register is reporting that all Shaw’s locations will be re-opening under different names after a “period of renovation.”

MORE TO COME SOON.

ps: Thank you, @sduboff, for this tip-off! You’re a champ.

  • I was having a good day until now. Why is everything on Whalley Ave. disappearing?!?!

  • Oh, nm, I just got to the end of the article. It’ll reopen, phew. I was in hysterics, Bullblog!

  • new haven is going to become a food desert!

  • but not a dessert desert!

  • shaws is already paid by NewHaven to be here

  • This reminds me of the time the “Baby Kroger” next to Emory was replaced by a CVS and my whole neighborhood started a “save Emory Village” campaign against it. That one failed, but could Yale pull it together?

  • Do not worry It will be replace by Shop Rite
