College students don’t know who the vice president is

The Yahoo! News Ask America Van–a project of Ask America, Yahoo News’ midterm election news blog–has been traveling the country and stumping many college students with basic civics questions. The blog has compiled the best responses into a devastating video. The questions that puzzled many college students included: “Who is the vice president? Who is the speaker of the House? How many U.S. senators are there?”

When asked who the vice president is, one student responded, “Oh my god, I know it. He’s an idiot.” How ironic. Other necessary clarifications included that Hillary Clinton is not the Speaker of the House, that Harry Truman has been dead since 1972, and that there are neither 25 justices on the Supreme Court, nor are there 9, 51, 56, 97, 102, or 200 U.S. senators.

If this video is any indication, Christine O’Donnell (“you”) might get a senate seat and Sarah Palin might become president due to the simple fact that many voters have NO IDEA what they’re doing. Last I checked, college campuses were supposed to be hotbeds of political activism. Guess not.
