EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sam Tsui and Allison Williams
Unless you’ve been living under a rock with no internet access, you already know the names Sam Tsui and Allison Williams. The Bullblog scored an exclusive interview with the duo to talk about future plans, the upcoming College Musical, and, of course, Youtube fans.
How do you pronounce your last name?
ST: Shoe-y.
What is the legality of your newly released Covers Album?
ST: Every time we sell a song – for say, 99 cents through iTunes – we have to pay 8 cents to the Harry Fox Corporation. It’s more expensive for songs like the Michael Jackson medley, of course.
Reading Youtube comments?
ST: Yes, definitely. The first couple days, I’m checking it relatively frequently.
AW: I check to see the view count, and then I look at the comments. The cool thing about having fans is that when someone leaves a comment, another fan will jump in to defend us. Lots of German fans.
College Musical?
AW: It’s going to be a really great learning experience. Every time you get to be on camera you learn something new.
ST: It’s going to be really cool to have a mini-movie set experience on Yale campus.
Favorite song?
ST: I would have to say, Don’t Stop Believing. It was sort of my first big one. I just love it.
AW: Hallelujah — it’s just a gorgeous song. Tik Tok is fun, but people don’t get that it’s ironic. I have never, nor do I ever, expect to feel like P. Diddy.
Facebook?
ST: I’m at my limit with friends on Facebook. I started accepting requests, and when it first started, I never assumed… I’m at 4,600 — I’m leaving the 400 I have left for real people that I meet. [Ed: Friend-limit is apparently 5,000 on Facebook.]
If you could have anyone’s career…
AW: Toss-up between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep.
ST: I would say…
AW: Say Celine, just say it.
ST: ….
AW: Barbara! She took a break from singing, forever!
ST: I’m going to have to leave it.
Twitter?
AW: No.
ST: I have a Twitter, but I don’t use it enough.
AW: But apparently I was tweeted about by Joe.
I think I saw yesterday on Twitter that you were wearing suspenders?
ST: Oh no… I was… It was for initiation. I was being “hipster-y.” Twitter is scary. I don’t like it.
30 second Academy Awards acceptance speech for Best Actress. Go.
AW: Wow, I am speechless. I never expected this to happen, but at the same time you spend your whole childhood wishing that this would happen. First of all, stereotypically, I need to thank the Academy. I need to thank my wonderful husband John Krasinski for always being there for me; Judd for making a comedy finally with a serious role for women; everyone in the picture — nobody thought Furbies the Movie would work out — and finally, my family.
30 second speech for Best New Artist at the Grammy’s.
ST: I would say, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually up here.” … I’m not an improv person. I would thank my family, Kurt, and all my friends.
Plans for more duets?
AW/ST: We’re open to suggestions. [Ed: Don't worry... I already suggested Taylor Swift/Boys Like Girls.]
Lastly, did you take the Bullblog a cappella survey?
ST: I’m really… It was one of those things that I was like, “Oh my God, it’s awful.” …. But I had to do it. I’m secretly so interested to see….
AW: I love the Duke’s Men.
