Four classes to take if you’re depressed or wish you were more depressed

Coming to college is a little bit like entering a sickening factory of happiness. Everyone seems happy to see you, especially as a freshman, all the time. Sometimes you just need a little dose of the real world.

The Rwandan Genocide in Comparative Context — PLSC 447 — David Simon
This class explores in depth one of the worst tragedies of our lifetime, in terms of sheer human devastation and lack of international response– from “the motivations of the killers” to the “continuation of the genocidal dynamic within the Great Lakes region.” One student summed it up nicely: “The class is a bit depressing, as it is on genocide, but it is super interesting.”

Genocide and Ethnic Conflict — EP&E 269 — Jasmina Basirevic Regan
This popular class has more bang for the buck, if you will.  It explores four genocides from the past sixty years–the former Yugoslavia, the Holocaust, Rwanda, and Cambodia. It’s taught at the same time as the Rwandan Genocide in Comparative Context, so good luck choosing between the two.

Theorizing Sexual Violence – WGSS 370 — Melanie Boyd
The course description says this is course is an “examination of key feminist theories of violence against women, considering the ways in which they have both illuminated and altered broader cultural narratives of sexual violence.” Reviews of the class are pretty stellar: “YES!!” “:)” “Everyone must take this course!”

New Haven and the American City — SOCY 149 — Alan Plattus
See above.
