It’s always tea time in the BAC

So I just went to the Mrs. Delany show at the British Art Center. Yeah, true, it’s like, good. There are some pretty pictures there. True dat. The room full of bric-a-brac puts even Freeman’s Restaurant to shame. And sure, it’s kind of cool that the BAC makes Yale the authoritative place to see a genre of art in America–but honestly, did Yale (and Paul Mellon) have to pick genre as boring as 18th and 19th century British art? I get it! Turner! Naval scenes! Flowers! Portraits that are not as good as Flemish portraits! Blah blah blah…who wants to see this art? It’s a shame, really, because this terminally boring art is housed in one of the very nicest buildings on campus. Isn’t there a way to put that Louis Kahn gem to better use? Yes! Even though the land of lords and crumpets was, artistically, the most boring country in the world for many centuries, there has been some pretty awesome art made there in the last half-century. I’m sure the curators there consider Damien Hirst vulgar, but there’s no denying he draws a crowd wherever he goes. Or, even better, the BAC could host a stateside showing of the Turner Prize contestants. It might not be as tried and true as Constable, but at least it would get people under the age of 53 into the gallery.
