Life after Cinema at the Whitney involves a lot of Criterion

Few of you may have noticed that this year that there is no more Cinema at the Whitney. If you’re a freshman, all you need to know is that there used to be a group that showed very obscure movies at the WHC and printed a well-designed poster listing them all. Not many people went to the screenings and when they did they felt embarrassed at their lack of film buffing. Still, the poster was very well-designed, so it’s sad to see it disappear. But its death does not mean you can’t see old movies and feel like your procrastination is justified! The Criterion has not one, but two, series of classic-movie showings on the weekends—Insomnia Theatre, which tends toward the scary and culty, and Movies & Mimosas, which tends toward the madcap and the witty (and features alcohol!). They aren’t free, but if you are a Criterion Club member—there’s a card, which makes it feel exclusive—tickets cost just $4, which is pretty close to free. It’s just 5.8% the price of a ticket to the Game in section 28-A!
