On Hulu now: My So-Called Life
"People are always saying you should be yourself, like yourself is this definite thing, like a toaster. Like you know what it is even. But every so often I'll have, like, a moment, where just being myself in my life right where I am is, like, enough."- Angela Chase
The nineties drama My So-Called Life stars Claire Danes as sullen and brooding Angela Chase, a very self-aware high school sophomore from an average Pittsburgh suburban high school. The plot is pretty much the same as any tv show or movie set in high school: unpopular girl makes new wild friends, dies her hair, starts drinking, falls in love with the popular bad boy and gets in fights with her parents about letting her stay out. What makes the show so wonderful, however, is Angela’s sober narration through each episode about trying to “find herself” through all these trifling experiences. Claire Danes delivers each line to make it sound like something you’ve already read on someone’s facebook page. The characters are all well imagined, the 90′s outfits and expressions are absolutely to die for, and you can’t help but feeling like you and Angela Chase would have been best friends if you had gone to high school together. It’s great to watch while you pretend to do your homework and with only one season, there’s no risk of spending an entire semester avoiding homework and going out just to see the next show like you did last year with House.
