On Hummus snack packs

By 23 February 2010 One Comment

Though I would hesitate to cite it as my favorite food, I more consistently enjoy the taste of hummus than I do of virtually anything else I eat. I like it on bread; I like it on pita; I like it on carrots. I happily eat it as a lunch, an appetizer or as a late-night snack. In my years of hummus-eating, I’ve tasted quite a few brands, and have spent a long time comparing them all. The king of mass-produced brands is the somewhat obscure Abraham’s—it marries an aggressive, full flavor with a texture at the magical intersection of chunky and smooth. But the only place to buy it in New Haven is Edge of the Woods, and that’s a very far walk, so I usually settle for Tribe. The 40 Spices variety is actually quite good.

That’s why I was happy to walk into Durfee’s a few minutes ago and find they had replaced their Sabra Snackpacks—with tiny flat pretzels—with little trays of crackers and hummus from Tribe. The same convenience, I thought, without the mouth-coating unctuousness of Sabra.

The only problem? The pack is too small. It comes with just four (suprisingly good) crackers. Four! That practically rounds down to zero. Tribe Execs, if you’re out there, let it be known: if you increased the size of your snackpacks by just 30%, you would make one boy in New Haven very, very happy.
