Pro-Bono College Counseling (through College Confidential)

By 17 October 2009 2 Comments

Ah, College Confidential. I only too well remember the days when getting into Yale or Harvard meant more to me than anything in this whole, wide world. And when I really needed good, solid advice on selling my soul to the college admissions process, I knew I could turn to my friends at College Confidential. Unlike Joe, I never posted any comments — I just liked comparing my “stats” to other applicants and living vicariously through their fears. I too wondered whether it was beneficial to send in an early application! And if I was only a Siemens-Westinghouse semi-finalist, was I totally fucked??? CONFUSIONCHAOSMADNESSSATSCORESAHHHHHHH.

Since sending in my application early to Harvard actually did not help (take note, dear CC readers), but things probably worked out for the best anyways (aren’t you excited to one day take part in this age-old Harvard-Yale rivalry??), I now feel exponentially more qualified to advise potential applicants. That being said, probably anyone over the age of 16 is more qualified to advise potential applicants than other College Confidential commenters. But anyways, the point is that I’m qualified. Which is why I’d like to turn our attention to “vbplayer” who asks, “How much does being a legacy help?”

The first problem in assessing vbplayer’s situation is that he never tells us in what way he has legacy. He does, however, tell us that he’s a white male, but as he left off height/weight, top/bottom, he’s really only giving us half the picture.

He also only posted his ACT scores. Not a good sign. Unless you can show up to Bulldog Days and subtly slip in that you got a 2400 each and every time you took the SAT, Yale’s not particularly interested. Vbplayer did, however, start an online business selling crocheted items, which more or less identifies him as the “1″ in “1 in 4, maybe more.” And so we see his chances of admission rise, slightly.

As for extracurriculars, vbplayer is Editor-in-Chief of his Yearbook, a “Prestigious yearbook that has one [sic] multiple national awards.” Kudos, vbplayer, for establishing not only that you’re well-rounded, but that you also missed the lesson on homophones. Well done.

All in all, I would place vbplayer’s chances of admission at 15-1. Stay tuned for my next counseling session.
