Skappo Merkato shoots to the top

By 27 January 2010 No Comments

When I did my round-up of the best pork sandwiches in New Haven, I was pretty thorough, but I apparently missed one excellent contender: Skappo Merkato in Ninth Square, just around the corner from its older sibling Skappo Wine Bar, a favorite of former Herald EIC Rachel Achs. This afternoon, I walked over (if I leave any impact on Yale’s psyche in my four years here, I want it to be for Yale to realize that Ninth Square just isn’t that far a walk. And neither is Judie’s.) and ordered a hot Porchetta Panino—astoundingly delicious, and at $8, no more expensive than a typical sandwich downtown. Because they are also a gourmet market, all the ingredients are fresh and super-high-quality; ciabatta is sourced from a local bakery. Because Merkato often gets busy midday, they recommend calling orders in—their number is (203) 773-1600. Make it happen.
