Who will replace Lalli?
Last Wednesday, in sad news, Prof. Lalli announced he would not be taking up his post as the JE master; his recovery has been more halting than expected, he explains, and he will not be able to do the mastership justice in the short term. So the question becomes: who will be the next master of JE?
Could it be….
PROS: already affiliated with JE; brilliant genius; the new home would allow him to live right next to bestie Steven Smith
CONS: as a Sterling Professor, perhaps unlikely to accept position
ODDS: 25:1
PROS: has done a great job so far in the position; seems to be having fun
CONS: does she really want to commit for the long term?
ODDS: 15:1
PROS: widely acclaimed for his teaching in the Physics department; Yale is always trying to promote its sciences
CONS: he doesn’t clearly have much to gain from the position
ODDS: 15:1
PROS: high profile, much-beloved Game Theory lecture wins him fans; his wife Stephanie Markovits is also a professor
CONS: not very nurturing
ODDS: 10:1
PROS: very high-profile position as DUS of English; has two children and knows how to be warm
CONS: still quite young
ODDS: 6:1
PROS: excellent research credentials in a department (Chemistry) without much representation on the Council of Masters
CONS: no history of university leadership to speak of
ODDS: 6:1
PROS: has the right age, the right charisma, the right level of distinguishment, and a popular class in Art History
CONS: no history of university leadership to speak of
ODDS: 5:1

Jessica Helfand, is the perfect woman for the job. Having taught in the School of Art (where she is know affectionately, by her students, as design mom) for 10 years, this year she taught the first ever Freshman seminar out of the Art School. Jessica attended Yale both undergrad, and received her MFA in Graphic Design here as well. She is currently in India, on her way to a residency at the American Academy in Rome. (Jessica’s husband, William, is a senior faculty member at SOM.) Jessica’s love for both Yale and its students is unmatched in any other faculty member, she’d be the perfect JE master!
