Yale-ntine’s Day: Dinner for Two in New Haven
Caseus, 93 Whitney Ave. Small and romantic, but you’re out of luck. It’s closed on Sundays, and its all booked for its $65 prix fixe menu on Saturday. Though a Bullblog fave, the menu was actually pretty boring (“the sexiest cheesecake you’ve ever had”??), so postpone Valentine’s Day until Monday and go for the mac and cheese!
Union League Cafe, 1032 Chapel St. They don’t have a special menu up for Valentine’s Day, and they didn’t answer the phone, but try anyways at (203) 562-4299 if you’re willing to splurge for what Mark Bittman called “imaginative contemporary cooking with traditional French bistro food”.
Basta, 1006 Chapel St. Also small and romantic, also didn’t pick up the phone. (203) 772-1715.
Zinc, 964 Chapel St. $29 prix fixe plus tax from 12-4 PM on Sunday if you’re interested in eating early. (203) 624-0507.
Barcelona, 155 Temple St. Valentine’s Day = Suckling pig roast? Call (203) 848-3000 if that might sound appealing to your date.
Pacifico, 220 College St. $45 prix fixe, also didn’t pick up the phone (next: a New Haven trend piece on establishments not answering calls??). Your choice of salmon, filet mignon, stuffed chicken, or lobster risotto. Call (203) 772-4002.
Bentara, 76 Orange St. The cheapest prix fixe with the most choices. Also has huge portions if you’re hungry. (203) 562-2511, or go on their website to book through OpenTable.
Heirloom, 1157 Chapel St. $45 for three course prix fixe, $68 with wine pairings. They have reservations available for 8:45, and the butternut squash and foie gras crema soup, and the northeast sea scallops sound pretty tasty. With wine, it’s exactly what Caseus would have cost you for some sexy cheesecake. (203) 503-3900.
Ibiza, 39 High St. $69 for four courses, including a surprise dessert for two. Reservations are available, call (203) 865-1933.
Foster’s, 56-62 Orange St. $29 for three courses. I don’t know what a calamari steak is, but you can choose it for an appetizer. Also didn’t pick up the phone — try for yourself at (203) 859-6666.
