Yale SCEA 2014 admit rate is 13.9%

The Bullblog has just learned from Yale Admission Director Jeffrey Brenzel that the admission rate for early applications in the Yale Class of 2014 is 13.9%, up slightly from 13.4% last year, in accordance with this year’s small drop in applications. Brenzel says:

Our final official app count for the early process was 5261. The number of admission offers is 730. The number of defers is 2639, and the number of denies is 1866. 26 of the applications were either incomplete or withdrawn.

We did not note any significant changes in the early applicant pool this year, and the rates of acceptance, deferral and denial were fairly similar to last year. Our applicants continue to be an exceptionally talented, highly diverse group of students. As always, we only accepted students that we were certain we would also accept in the spring, meaning that a significant number of the deferred students have equally strong chances of admission as the regular decision applicants.

This admission rate is roughly the same as Stanford’s for this year, 13.5, though both schools’ Early Admissions processes have become more difficult following the decision three years ago by Harvard and Princeton to drop their early admissions programs altogether.

  • Your admission sucks!!! I know of a person who has excellent credentials, extra-curricular, perfect scores and a very high average. He was deferred and few students from their school who did not have any of these above were accepted. Except that they were Chinese. This has been happening for a while. We feel Yale has been racist supporting black, chinese, white and rejecting/deferring brown skin. It is an absolute shame

  • I think some how Indo-American applicants are being discriminated by Yale. Some one needs to look into the problem for sure.

  • I think that brown skins are discriminated by yale admission committee. I know of a person who has excellent resume but did not get in.

  • I hope Yale should provide more information about its process. Yale is the only one in the league that has this early decision. Yale has an advantage over other schools in attracting good students. Yet, Yale put tremendous pressure on the students. Once got deferred, students has one week time to complete term final exam and one week to apply for other school. I heard Yale has score system in admission. What is it. Can Yale describe its process? Do those deferred application get a second read in the coming months? Do early decision and regular decision have different criteria? Why a student who do not qualify for early decision has a possibility in the regular decision? How many regular applicants Yale will have this year? 5000? plus 2660 deferred, about 8000 to compete the remain 300 seats?

    Actually the early pool admits will make up about 57% of the class when all is said and done: 750 out of 5,235 applicants. The remaining 575 seats will be filled from a regular applicant pool that may approach 20,000.

    Get the math?

    Yale favors the early pool because more than 80% of them will enroll, whereas only 50% or so of the “regular” applicants will pick Yale over some other choice they have.

  • Where is the Yale’s official announcement? There are so many differences in the numbers from different sources.

  • josh, are there really differences? i think the only sources of info so far have been us and the ydn, and i know for a fact we had the same source— the admissions director himself. any other sources are no good, and ours are as good as an announcement from the university.

    Much greater than the 0.2% difference is the fact the S defers relatively few applicants compared to Y. For better or worse, they have a very different admissions philosophy when it comes to deferral.

  • It’s really hard to hard to tell if the Ivies have race preference, but it’s definitely ugly if the colleges set quota or something like that to their applicants.

    can anybody tell how many brown, yellow and white people that the Ivies offered admission this year?
