5 classes to take if you’re an animal lover

By 10 January 2010 No Comments

By now it’s well established that some of us need David Attenborough nature documentaries, like “Planet Earth” to get through the day.  I for one think that studying animals is a perfectly legitimate way of studying humans.  Here are some classes to shop if you agree:

LING 149: Animal Communication & Human Language. Will this class teach you how to speak Whale?  I’m not sure, but I’m definitely going to find out!  If nothing else, this video should demonstrate that animals can be way better at communicating than some humans.

E&EB 272: Ornithology.  Birds are not the smartest of creatures, but they do get around really well.  Maybe we can learn a think or two from them.

ANTH 280: Evolution of Primate Intelligence. This class’s syllabus looks super intense, so you may need über-Primate intelligence to get through it.

PSYC 147: Animal Models of Clinical Disorders. Vegans steer clear: this class’s syllabus makes no mention of the ethical issues surrounding the testing of psychiatric drugs on animals.

CSCC220: The Future of Ocean Policy and Management. This class will particularly please fans of Attenborough’s under-appreciated master work, “Blue Planet.”  Topics include “International Whaling,” “The Collapse of Cod,” and “Spongebob Squarepants and Culture” (jk).
