“I’m also weird about accessories”: Your Bullblog Guide to Yale Sorority Rush

By 24 January 2010 5 Comments

Inspired by IvyGate’s coverage of the Cornell-Pi Phi-Phiasco, I felt an investigation of Yale’s sorority scene was necessary. SO: three choices, Kappa Alpha Theta (“Theta”), Pi Beta Phi (“Pi Phi”), and Kappa Kappa Gamma (“Kappa” — which apparently does not have a website. The first link that comes up when searching “Yale” and “Kappa Kappa Gamma” is a YDN op-ed from 2002 titled, “Don’t Judge Me Because I’m a Kappa Girl.” Whoops…).

You’ve already missed two “Interest Nights,” but never fear — Recruitment Events #1 and #2 are this week, on Monday and Wednesday. Sunday is “Pref Night” where lucky girls receive invites to sororities, and Monday, February 1 is “Bid Day,” where you apparently pick up your bid in front of Commons from 11 AM to 1 PM. I think it’s always best to make a public spectacle of events where there’s an opportunity for acceptance or rejection, so keep up the classy work, ladies.

Bizarre tidbits from the Theta/Pi Phi websites:

- One of the official Pi Phi colors is “wine”; their official flower is the “wine carnation.” I like where this is going.
- The emphasis on “Personal and Intellectual Growth” as a motivation for joining a sorority. See Pi Phi’s website on “Lifelong Growth Objectives” for more info. Theta adds moral growth to the list (but behind social and intellectual growth in 1st and 2nd place.)
-How exactly does one “Think Theta”?????? Post in the comments with further details on this meditative process, PLS.
-Theta has 75 members, 33 of which are also officers.
-Sororities are academic above all else. Theta had the highest GPA of all three sororities last semester, while Pi Phi won highest GPA at the 2009 national convention.

If you’re planning to rush, just remember: NO MUFFIN TOPS!!! That being said,

The moment you become a Theta at Yale, you have seventy-five new contacts in your phone book to call when you’re hungry
