State of the Art vs. State of the Union: The Drinking Game

By 27 January 2010 One Comment

Who can say, on this day in history, which will be better remembered fifty years from now: Barack Obama’s first State of the Union address, which airs tonight, or Steve Jobs’s introduction of the revolutionary, “game-changing” Apple iPad, which happened this morning?  I’d even be willing to hedge my bets and say that Apple scheduled their iPad introduction specifically to compete head-to-head with Barack.  Audacious, no?

Choosing which of these events to watch is going to be tough, and even tougher would be devising drinking games to go along with them separately.  So I’ve made up a dual-purpose drinking game which covers both!  Catch Barack on C-SPAN or Youtube, or watch Steve’s keynote address here.  Or better yet, play them both at the same time!

Take one sip if…

  • Barack or Steve mentions somebody’s “time and effort.”
  • The speech is interrupted by audience applause.
  • Barack or Steve says the words “something amazing” or the world “simple.”
  • There’s a dramatic pause.

Take two sips if…

  • Barack says “internet” or Steve says “politics”.
  • Somebody in the audience coughs conspicuously.
  • Steve seems like a populist politician or Barack seems like a computer geek.

Finish your drink if…

  • There are technical difficulties (faulty plug-in, teleprompter difficulty).
  • You’re watching both at the same time, and they have “drink” moments that coincide.
  • You’re at a viewing party for either event.

  • Try drinking every time both sides of Congress give standing applause.
