In with the New
I’ll admit, it’s not a great time to be extolling the virtues of the New. Taylor Swift’s new persona is her most grating one yet. Apple’s new iPhone now has a “neural network” capable of “machine learning,” which is clearly code for “will eventually become the artificial intelligence that will wipe the human race from the planet.” And, well, we don’t have to talk about 45 right now. You already know.
So what does it mean to be Yale’s Most Daring Publication Since 1986 in the year of our lord 2017? I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and once I realized that we, a humble campus publication, would not be the ones to launch the revolution, I decided it would be more reasonable to launch a new website instead. More accurately, we’re launching what we in the biz call “a rebrand.”
When you’re as daring as the Herald is, it’s important to stay fresh, stay current. Though our old website will always have a special place in my heart, it was not as user-friendly as our brand-spanking-new Medium page. Though our old print design still tickles me to the core, we’re trying something new, more multimedia, just for fun.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my many hours of Herald soul-searching, it’s that a massive influenza plague will soon end not only the Herald but all human institutions, so I really can’t fuck up that badly. (Yes, I did fall into a few internet holes in those hours.) So let’s not take ourselves too seriously. Let’s take risks, and have fun, and publish what conventional publications might not. Pick up a hard copy in a dining hall near you every Friday, and if you’re a faraway fan, we’ll see you right here.
